 BLOG QUESTIONS

1. We see the character Neville Longbottom grow and change throughout the novel. In the beginning he’s very forgetful, clumsy, and never stands up for himself. Towards the middle/end we see him stand up to Draco, venture out at night to try and warn Harry and Hermione of trouble, and we even see him stand up to the trio themselves. Dumbledore quotes “There are all kinds of courage, it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends (pg.306).” What does this suggest about this character and how do you think he will continue to develop in the other books?

2. The trio Hermione, Ron, and Harry prove to us what friendship really means. This is just one theme that they express when it comes to these three characters what are some others that relate to them and why?

3. The relationship between Professor Snape and Harry Potter is very strange. Harry learns that the reason Snape hates him so much is because Harry’s father and Snape were enemies and Harry’s father saved Snape’s life. Do you think that this is the only reason, or is there something stronger that has caused all this tension? Explain.

Summary of events in the novel

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is written by J.K Rowling. Harry thought that he was just an ordinary eleven year old boy, but he was wrong. He’s an orphan that lives with his aunt and uncle after his parents died when he was just a baby. He finds out that he’s actually a wizard. We see him throughout his new journey at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He faces many adventures with his two best friends Ron and Hermione during his first year. That includes playing quidditch, learning new spells, defeating a troll, taking on the responsibility of making sure the powerful Sorcerer’s Stone is protected(provides elixir of life and gold), preventing Voldemort (he killed his parents) from returning to power, and learning more about his past.

Critique

The book I read is called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It is written by the well known J.K Rowling. It was published in 1997. This is the first novel of the seven book series. It is one of the most well known, loved, and most famous books of all times. All seven have been extremely successful.

This book is about an ordinary boy that finds out the he’s actually a wizard; he faces many new obstacles as he learns about the new and interesting world of Hogwarts which is filled with witches, magical creatures, wizards, dragons, flying broomsticks, and most of all magic.

When I first decided to read this book I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not. I knew that is was very popular and a few of my friends have told me how good all of these books are, but I didn’t think it would be for me. It turned out that I was wrong, this book kept me interested the whole time and it was a great story. I really liked how it can make you feel like there’s a whole different world out there. That shows how descriptive the writing is, and also how creative it is. I loved the three main characters because a lot of people can relate to them and they help to show the true meaning of friendship. I also liked that there was just the right amount of action and the fact that I was learning about this magical world just like Harry was. There’s not a lot of books that you can do that in, I didn’t know anything about this new place. That says a lot about how extraordinary an author like J.K Rowling really is! Getting to the end of the book really leaves you wondering what will happen in the next, so I’ve decided that I will continue to read the rest of the series.

It’s really hard to find something that I don’t like about the book because I liked every part about it. It had a great plot and was fun and easy to read. I guess that it could use some more explanation about some of the characters. For example, Professor Snape seems like an important character, but we don’t really learn much about him or his past. Although, it could be mentioned more in the following six books? Other than that I can’t think of anything that’s negative about this novel.

I would recommend this novel to anybody that can read. People of all ages would like it. Parents can even read it to their kids that can’t read it themselves, and I’m sure that both of them will fall in love with the first book and probably the rest of the series. I would even recommend it to people that normally hate to read, and I say that because that describes myself.  I was never the type of person that would read very many books, but I’m glad I read this one.

J.K Rowling Biography

J.K Rowling was born July 31st, 1965 in England. An interesting fact is that she chose Harry Potter’s birthday as the same date. Her full name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling. She was born in Chipping Sodbury, which is a part of England. Her mom gave birth to her when she was twenty years old. She also has a younger sister. She would become one of the most successful and most memorable authors of all times.

She graduated from Exeter University. Her parents pressured her to become a bilingual secretary, so she decided to study French and was even able to stay in Paris for a year. After she graduated she knew that being a secretary wasn’t her passion. She described her self as the worse secretary ever because she was very disorganized and she found it difficult to pay attention during meetings. She also noted that she would always write story ideas when she was suppose to be taking notes. After her mother died in 1990 she decided to teach English, she was 26 years old. She said that she always loved teaching and that gave her time to work on writing which helped her form the idea for the famous Harry Potter novels.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is just the first book of the seven book series. After the first book was published in 1997 Rowling was able to quit teaching and was able to take on a full time job of writing. She was a single mother struggling to raise her daughter, so this was very good news. After publishing the next two Harry Potter novels it was said that JK Rowling had already make about $400 million by the year 2000. Those books were printed in over 69 languages and all of them quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. There’s not a person in the world that doesn’t know the name Harry Potter. She also wrote three additional books that were tied to the Harry Potter series. They were titled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beetle the Bard. She never thought her books would be so popular which you can learn through the following quote “When I went into this, my agent said to me, “I don’t want you going away from this meeting thinking you’re going to make a fortune.” Then I said to him, “I know I’m not going to make any money out of it. I know I’m not going to be famous.”-JK Rowling

J.K Rowling is of course a fantasy writer. Multiple things distinguish her from other authors, which is why she is so successful. She makes up her own words, creatures, and spells. She also has a great ability of making up characters and naming them. Her books are bring you into a completely new world. A great trait that she has is persistence, it took her a total of 17 years to finish the series. The main thing that distinguishes her from other authors is the fact that she was able to connect all her books through even the tinniest details. For example, something that we read in book one was very important to something in book seven. That takes a lot of talent and a lot of carefully forming ideas and thinking ahead.

Rowling has enough money to do nothing else for the rest of her life. All seven books have sold millions of copies, all the movies have been very successful, merchandise sales are off the charts, and the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter amusement park has brought in even more revenue. All this won’t stop her from continuing to write. She said that she does still plan to write, but she hasn’t published anything else since the Harry Potter series. She has been quoted on working on a few new novels.
